It's actually not all that slower than some Core i3 notebooks on the market, such as the Toshiba PA3534U-1BAS Battery; but Core-i3-based notebooks also have the ability to process four software threads instead of only two for the Pentium, so they have a lot more headroom for multitasking.

What this means is that if you'll be using the PAVILION DV6000 for media encoding, depending on the program you use, you may not be able to use the computer comfortably until that task is completed as the entire CPU will go toward processing that task. You can definitely use the PAVILION DV6000 to convert video formats for use on an iPhone or Android smartphone; in our tests using AutoGordianKnot, the dell precision m6300 charger took 1hr 27min to convert a DVD file into a 1.5GB Xvid file, and this is an excellent time for such an inexpensive laptop.

You can't use the Pavilion DV6000 for gaming though; its score of 1434 in 3DMark06 underlines this fact. For decent gaming performance, you'll need a machine with a graphics card that can crack at least 6000 in this benchmark.

Pavilion DV6000: Software setup

Before you can use the HP Pavilion DV9000, you have to sit through HP's software installation process. This didn't go smoothly in our tests, with the installer crashing before we reached HP's 'The Computer is Personal Again' welcome screen. This screen prompts you to register the computer as well as to set updates for the installed software and enable whether or not you want HP to collect information on the usage of that software. Then it asks if you want to activate the pre-installed Norton Internet Security software, and then it shows you how you can connect to the Internet. All of this just adds time to the overall setup procedure and it's a little frustrating. We wish HP would do away with it and just let the computer boot!

Hp Pavilion dv9000 Battery is well built overall, but you can tell that it’s a cheap notebook. In particular, its screen has very narrow viewing angles, too much reflectivity and you can never be truly comfortable sitting in front of it — we were constantly adjusting its angle in order to lose reflections and to get better contrast. Its touchpad also isn't great as it is the exact same material as the palmrest and you can't tell if you're within its boundaries when moving your finger.

Furthermore, its buttons are awful; they are too hard to press, especially with one hand. It's one of those touchpads where you have to use one hand to move the pointer and the other hand to press the buttons. The stiffness is due to the single plastic moulding for both buttons; they'd be much easier to press if they were separate left- and right-click buttons. The Nikon EN-EL15 Battery chassis doesn't creak when you pick it up from either end and it feels quite solid. Its keyboard is decent, although there are shortcut keys to the left of the Tab and left Shift keys, and there are Page Up and Page Down buttons to the right of the Enter and Backspace keys. These take some getting used to.

In our endurance test, in which we disable power management, maximise screen brightness, enable Wi-Fi and loop an Xvid-encoded video, it lasted 2hr 26min. This is a very good time for a 15.6in notebook (especially a cheap one) and you'll get close to three hours when using it for basic office work or simple Web browsing. It means you can free yourself of cables any time you want to cart the notebook onto your balcony or out to your backyard to watch a movie or do some writing — although you will have to put up with reflections on the screen.

Conclusion

Our verdict is this: if you want to buy a reasonably good looking, sturdy and cheap computer for basic office and multimedia tasks, then you can't go wrong with the Dell Inspiron 1545 AC Adapter. Its screen can be frustrating to look at sometimes, and its touchpad design isn't very good, but you have the option of hooking it up to a big-screen TV or monitor via HDMI, and you can plug in a mouse, too. It's suitable for families, students and even first-time computer buyers.

Design and user comfort

The Dell XPS M1530 Battery is thin and light, and it looks nice. The battery slots into the spine of the laptop between the screen's hinges, so there is lots of unused space between the keyboard and the screen.

It's the only design that could have been implemented to keep the notebook's profile thin. At its thickest point, the Dell XPS M1530 Laptop Battery pack is only 44mm. On the other end, the palm rest is a little too small, it's only 48mm deep, which means that the touchpad is also very small, only 53x44mm.

We're not fans of the Dell's keyboard, which is a little bouncy and has keys that are too flat and too stiff. We wish the keys were softer, as we made plenty of typos while writing this review. The combination of the hard keys and the small touchpad makes the Dell Inspiron 6400 Battery a little awkward to use, and it's by no means comfortable to type on for prolonged periods of time, in fact it can be tiring.

That said, there's always a trade-off between user comfort and small size in laptop design. The chances are you will probably get used to this keyboard and touchpad after using them for a few weeks.

Comfort issues aside, the 11.6in Dell Vostro is very mobile and we love the fact that it also comes with a relatively small wall wart adapter, rather than a power brick. It's very easy to transport in a backpack or small laptop case. Around its edges it has three USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, VGA, Gigabit Ethernet and microphone and headphone ports. You also get a webcam, Bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi.

It doesn't have a fingerprint reader, which would come in useful on a laptop such as this, but that's not a major drawback for us.

The 11.6in screen of the Dell Latitude 131L has a resolution of 1366x768 and a glossy finish. It's prone to reflections and a little hard to use in very well lit areas unless the brightness is maximised. But overall it's decent for reading documents and viewing web pages. A matte screen would be welcomed on this model.

Specifications and performance

On the inside, the laptop has an Intel Core i3-380UM CPU, which is an ultra-low-voltage model with a 1.33GHz frequency. The rest of the configuration includes 2GB of DDR3 SDRAM, integrated Intel HD graphics and a 5400rpm, 320GB hard drive. Its CPU performed as expected in our Blender 3D test, with the laptop recording a time of 1min 52sec.

This is identical to the time recorded by the Sony NP-FM50 Series. However, the Aspire 1680 Battery was swifter in the iTunes MP3 encoding test: it recorded 1min 56sec compared to 3min 06sec for the Sony.

You won't want to use the Aspire for 3D graphics tasks, as it's just not powerful enough. This was shown in 3DMark06, in which it recorded 1101 marks. Furthermore, while you can use this laptop for converting video files for use on portable media players, it's not recommended as it will take ages.

Converting a DVD file to a 1.5GB Xvid file using AutoGordianKnot took 2hr 14min, which is almost identical to the Sony. It's about an hour slower than a regular-voltage Core i3 notebook such as the Toshiba Satellite a200 Battery .

In our battery rundown test, in which we disable power management, enable Wi-Fi, maximise screen brightness and loop an Xvid-encoded video, the Aspire lasted 2hr 24min, which is 50 min less than the Sony, but this is an expected result as the Acer uses a smaller battery (4-cell instead of 6-cell) in keep the laptop slightly lighter weight and thinner. Still, if you enable a power management plan and tone down the screen brightness, you should be able to get close to three hours out of it.
